Did you know that the ingredients which make up your skincare products can be making you sick? Many natural ingredients found in traditional skincare products have long been linked to a variety of health problems including allergic reactions, cancer, hormone disruption, and birth defects. So yes, your skincare could make you ill! The Top 12 Most Dangerous Ingredients to Look Out For in Your Skin Care & Beauty Products: parabens, phthalates, SLSs, TEA, RNAs, DMDM hydroxide, triclosan, liquid paraffin, mineral oil, benzyl peroxide, triclosan, imidazlodinyl urea, and synthetic fragrance. What’s so scary about all this? It seems like there is always something new concerning the dangers of skincare and beauty products.

So, what’s so scary about the Top 12? According to respected dermatologist Dr. David Palmer, chair of internal medicine at the University of California-Irvine’s Department of Surgery and director of the Stanford Children’s Hospital Sleep Disorders Clinic, every ingredient on the Dr. David says’s list is a “known or likely human carcinogen.” Other ingredients on the list of scary ingredients include sulfates, parabens, sulfates of mercury, and volatile organic chemicals (VOCs). Not only are they all known or likely human carcinogens, but each of them have been associated with some level of cancer or other serious health problems.

Let’s take the first two on the Dr. David says list, sulfates. These are common surfactants used in cosmetic and pharmaceutical products. When added to the top layer of the skin, surfactant molecules are usually found as sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS), which is used in cosmetic cleansers and skin washes. When they get down into the lower layers, such as in the epidermis, they are usually found as sodium laureth sulfate (SLS-La), which is used in shampoos and conditioners. Both of these ingredients are surfactants that can cause allergic reactions, breakouts, itching, flaking and dryness.

Another common chemical in skincare products, parabens, are usually found as the main ingredient in anti-aging makeup. They are widely used as preservative, because they are a cheap way to make cosmetics last longer. While it is true that parabens might have a degree of wrinkle resistance, there is no proven link between using them and skin cancer. The main problem with parabens is that they can get into the pores of the skin and get trapped, which leads to acne and unwanted breakouts. Unfortunately, most people who use facial makeup also use facial cleansers and conditioners.

There are some natural ingredients you should look for as well, because they are less likely to cause allergic reactions or breakouts. For example, if you are looking for a facial cream, look for the ingredients avocado oil, macadamia oil and Shea butter. Avocado oil and Macadamia oil are rich in sterling, which are plant steroids. Sterolins are known to promote collagen growth, which makes the skin softer and smoother. Shea butter is often seen only in anti-aging skincare products, but it has been shown to reduce fine lines and wrinkles, scars and dark circles on the face.

Most of the best skincare products contain the right ingredients for any type of skin. In addition to using a good cleanser and toner, you want to use a moisturizer after every other application, no more than once or twice per day. Look for something that contains Cynergy TK, Phytessence Wakame and coenzyme Q10, because these ingredients have been proven to reduce wrinkles and reduce the appearance of wrinkles, scars and breakouts. They also help eliminate excess oil from your face.
